Cinderella │ Mengyao Qin

Inspired by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s production of Cinderella, this monochrome drawing reimagines the folklore through a contemporary lens. Qin uses black ink to distil the story into its most essential elements - its whimsy, its theatricality, and the emotional tension that unfolds through dance.

The absence of colour heightens the drama, allowing gesture, contrast and atmosphere to take centre stage. Figures emerge from the page in a state of suspended motion, caught between fantasy and reality, echoing the ballet’s blend of magic and human vulnerability.

Cinderella becomes a study in narrative tension: a moment where the familiar tale is reconstructed through movement, shadow and the expressive clarity of ink.
