Last week I was invited to the Private View of Treading Water, a striking collaborative exhibition at Digbeth Artspace, Zellig, Birmingham. The show pairs the writing of Tommy Holmes with Imogen Morris’s responses: Tommy’s words - born of experience and honesty, at times dark, raw and very brave in the way they explore mental-health themes are deeply affecting. Imogen has absorbed and interpreted those texts into beautifully tactile thread-and-nail sculptural works, physically and dimensionally rendering the emotions of the writing through texture, shadow and movement.
I attended the launch as a guest and left feeling grateful to count Imogen as a friend and creative ally in our community. I’m honoured to be working with her on separate upcoming projects at home and abroad, that we look forward to sharing later in the year.
If you’re in Birmingham, ‘Treading Water’ is on at Digbeth Artspace (Zellig, Gibbs Street, B9 4AT) until 2 November - it’s well worth seeing in person to stand within the environment and experience both the imaginative interpretation and the raw emotional texts.
